Notes:Charlotte Newman (1840-1927), or Mrs Philip Newman, as she is more generally known, was a pupil and later assistant of John Brogden (fl. 1842-1884). She specialised in jewellery of the "archaeological" or neo-Renaissance style, working in gold and enamel. She exhibited with Brogden in Paris in 1867 and in 1878 when he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur. She obtained the unique distinction of being given a médaille d'honeur as a collaborator. After Brogden's death in 1884, she established her own business retaining many of the craftsmen who had been working for John Brogden. Her business card read "Mrs Newman, Goldsmith and Court Jeweller, 10 Savile Row, London". The distinguishing feature of her jewellery was that she very rarely produced two pieces alike.
